Over the weekends I had a few of my friend’s take on tattoos and what it means to them or why they got it in the first place. In general, none of their family members accepted the idea of them getting tattoos, and most of them still do not allow tattoos. I also visited a couple of tattoo parlours and I asked if I could interview them and unfortunately, I don’t have any artistes I can interview at the moment. I’ll still be asking around. Another idea related to tattooing that I was thinking of working on was body art and its influence in modern culture from fashion to street art. But I faced problems as finding sources for example, Ed Hardy, would require rights and so on. So currently I’m thinking of a idea that showcases tattooing as an artform and as a lifestyle.

Video 9 Nov

To this clip from youtube of an american tattooed youth who does a great job in shedding the light on tattoo discrimination. He exposes companies that claim that an employer of any race and so on has equal rights, and shows that it is in fact just a false statement these companies make. He also interviews tattoo artistes and their take on this situation and how they feel about it.

So in the weekends I did as much research as I could about my topic being on tattooing. There’s several issues I’ve come across so far. Firstly, the ideas that I had initially were based off looking at clips and documentaries of tattooing and not of our local tattoo culture. But there is one topic in common with several other clips from around the world- Artistic discrimination. Apparently, body art is still being heavily discriminated and raising the issue of ‘judging a book by its cover’. From Honduras’ gang related tattoos, where even if a person is tatted up and not a gang member, they still get thrown in jail.

Text 29 Oct Update on Final Year Project.

I’ve settled on doing my project about Tattoos and Body Modifications. My first idea is a documentary on body art called ‘THink’. The main idea around it is to educate people on the art form of tattooing and also to break the barrier around the stereotyping that tattooed individuals face. Such issues being, why do people still think of tattooing as being gang related and are thus seen as a bad people. Here is a run down of what I would like to do for the documentary.

  1. A day to day life of a tattoo artist
  2. Profiling a client
  3. Brief introduction to when tattooing became a problem to society
  4. Influences of tattoo art in modern culture (Also a profile of a certain brand that made a fortune based off tattoo art)
  5. Extreme forms of body modification and the reason behind doing it
  6. Tattoo culture and the lifestyle (Speak on catching trend of teenagers getting heavily tatted up)
  7. Interviews of a client and a tattoo artist (And their take on the stereotyping as well as reasons behind their tattoos)

Problems I might facing doing the documentary

  1. Lack of sources for the origins
  2. Being able to find a willing tattoo artist
  3. Researching and obtaining footages. (Besides me filming it)
  4. Willing clients who allow to be filmed
